Deyci Carrillo Lopez is an abolitionist, community advocate, and poet. She brings years of experience advocating for immigrants, undocumented students, and systems impacted youth. Her own journey as an undocumented immigrant in this country has shaped her fire to stand up to injustice because every human being deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
Prior to coming to CLF, Deyci was working with a community based organization where she was part of amplifying the leadership, political power, and professional development of formerly incarcerated young adults. In this role, Deyci helped provide opportunities for systems impacted youth to create community-based solutions to incarceration and to create opportunities for diversion. Leading with the belief that those closer to the pain have the solutions to transform the problems in our communities.
She has also worked alongside community advocates and lawyers to protect and advance the rights of detained immigrants through advocacy, education, and legal representation. During her time in this role, she helped create and implement a curriculum to train detained community members to organize inside immigration detention. The end goal was to shut down detention centers in California. Collectively, the advocacy and organizing was able to end the last ICE contract with a county jail, Yuba County Jail.
In this role at CLF, Deyci is excited to add to the already existing advocacy being done by CLF alumnae. Together we will continue to build on our already existing power to show that we are here, we are loud, and we are proud.
As she says, “together, we got US.”
Outside of this work, Deyci enjoys performing and writing poetry. You can also find her co-hosting free entrepreneurship events that foster the emprendedora in us. She is always down to share a hike, sweet treat, or good read.
